two days into summer

Whew, that was an intense month. Luckily I get to have about two weeks free and then it all starts again. Yes!
I just started reading Genet by Edmund White.  It's pretty exciting if you like biographies and Jean Genet.  Genet certainly had lived a very interesting life, or as far as I can tell since I haven't even gotten to the point where he started his novels yet!

I'm really enjoying it though because White is, for the most part, combining the theories of Foucault and Sartre - operations of power and the "choosing" of self within that structure - as he details Genet's life (Sartre has also written a biography on Genet called Saint Genet). He is taking a specific interest in the effects of labeling child Genet early on as a criminal and the connections that has to homosexuality as they, as labels, are constructs placed upon the self through state apparatuses.

I'm looking forward to getting further through it. Maybe it will change course, maybe not.

Have you read any Kathy Acker? Her character in Blood and Guts in High School goes to Egypt with Jean Genet.
